SAR - AW101 AESA Radar

"The aircraft will be equipped with an advanced SAR equipment package including a multi-panel AESA surveillance radar system from Selex ES that provides 360° coverage".

When I first heard about this solution, having four panels around the airframe covering 360 degrees,I must admit that I had never hard of a solution like that. Persons Close to the Project admitted that they were not sure if it would work. On Tuesday I attended a celebration of the Norwegian Main Rescue Center`s 45 years anniversary. There I heard that Selex had tested two panels in order two check that a target observed on one of the panels were seamlessly transferred to the other panel. It worked, and the Project seems to deliver as promised. However, one is still keeping the traditional radome below the fuselage as a back up to cater for surprises.
